Eat Your Words Pack

Hello Everyone!
I have had so many requests for a single document that includes all my "Eat Your Words" word work printables.  So I finally had a chance this morning to combine all the pieces into one.  If you are not familiar with them...One fun, easy, yummy way to practice word chunks is by incorporating some kind of edible manipulative. By adding this element, kids practice writing and then zero in on the specific chunk by overlaying with an edible.  Each edible actually has the chunk in it that kids are working on. Kids will recognize and associate the edible word from environmental print!  Lots of connections going on!!  And then, of course, they get to EAT! ( I do have to be careful of any allergies or dietary restriction my kiddos have!) 
In this little packet you will get about 30 pages of "Eat Your Words" word work printables.  I've included 2 "random" chunk printables using Alphabits cereal and Cheez-It crackers. Sometimes you will be working on a chunk that has no clear edible choices.

Ell-o Everyone!

Can you guess that we worked hard on the ell chunk this week? :) I want to share a couple of ways to get some fun word work into your D5 time.  I have posted on my "Speller Tellers" before, and it was such a hit last year that I decided to pull it in again for our study of ell words. Perfect match.  You may have heard of this design as a cootie catcher or a fortune teller. A few years ago I decided to take this kid friendly fun foldable and turn it into a spelling practice activity.  Here are the steps:

start with a square piece of paper

fold corners in towards center

flip it over and fold new corners in towards center

Flip over and fin little pockets

label pockets with spelling words

flip over and write words on each triangle

write a positive note under each flap

put fingers in pockets so you can rotate to different words

When finished, have kiddos get with a buddy. They pick one of the words on the top to spell. Rotate speller teller as buddy spells words. Practice a few words and then pick a flap to open and revel positive message! 
Seriously, the kids did not want to put them down!! 

  We also practiced our ell words in a yummy way.  Yes! Another "Eat Your Words!"  This time my sweet team-mate had the great idea of using Jelly Beans for the e's!!  Loved it!! And the kids did too!!

Eat Your oo Words- Froot Loops

Hello Everyone!
I know I have posted about my "Eat Your Words" word work choice before, but today we did the kids' favorite one.  This week we are working on the long and short sounds of oo. We've worked hard on practicing the sounds and words all week, so it was time for this fun choice.  Kids end up reading and writing each word three times through this one little word work choice.  They should be ready for our spell check tomorrow!  Kids simply pick out oo words they would like to practice, write them with pencil, trace over them with any color marker, review where the oo is in each word with two Froot Loops, and then read the words to me or a friend!  OH! And then munch their oo's!

We love having fun with words.  Manipulating letters helps kids cement their learning. "Eating words"     

literally internalizes them!!  Ha Ha!

Eat Your Words and "If I had a Fishbowl..."

Hello Everyone!
We had a "fin"tastic day today!  The kids have been working so hard on everything first grade!  Yesterday we definitely built our stamina by writing for almost an hour! We are focusing on editing, and revising.  Today we were ready to publish one of our pieces big time! After writing about what they would put in a fishbowl, the kids got to create themselves holding a fishbowl with their written expression displayed.  They did an amazing job!!! I can't wait to put these up for open house! It amazes me how they can make their little faces look like them!!!

We haven't forgotten about word work!!  This week we are working on the fun little ee vowel chunk.  I decided to do another little "Eat your Words" activity and gave the kids some Cheez-its for the ee's!  So fun!!  I think they will remember the ee!!

Mike and Ike!!

Hello Everyone!
Great day today planning with my team!    Such a dedicated group of amazing teachers! Love you all, girls!!  We have some fabulous things planned for our little firsties! 
Besides all the MLK material we are going to cover this week, I made this fun little word work activity.  We are studying long i  with silent e this week. Along with Sparkly E kids are going to have the opportunity to sweeten up their practice and invite Mike and Ike along! Yes! Another "Eat Your Words" activity!  I have a feeling they are going to love this one!!

Won't You Be Mine?

Hello Everyone!
We are quickly approaching the sweetest day of the year...Valentines Day!  First graders looove Valentines Day!  I created a little unit to use during that entire week. It includes two poems, some word work activities, an eat your words activity, "The Biggest Valentine Ever" questioning activities and craft connection, about 6 different math activities dealing with comparing and ordering numbers up to and beyond 120, some fun math strategy games and a science activity.  I can't wait to try all this with my firsties!!  I hope you can use some of it as well!

Eat Your Words-Lucky Charms

Hello Everyone!

Just a quick post tonight...Getting ready for our annual Chili Cook-Off tomorrow! :) Should be fun!  Today we practiced our short u words during our Daily 5 Word Work time. The kids love it when I incorporate an edible component to our practice. Finding something to go along with short u was tricky! But, alas! Lucky Charms to the rescue!! I got lucky because Lucky Charms is not only an example of a short u word, but we are also learning about the moon this week and it just so happens that Lucky Charms has moon shapes! That crescent moon turned on it's end makes a great u!  Some of the kids used the rainbows and the horseshoes for u's as well! Way to go kids!

Eat Your words- Skittles!

Hello Everyone!

Just a super quick post tonight! Crazy busy weekend coming up!  

This week our sweet little firsties practiced the short i sound by brainstorming all the words they could think of with ip, in, and it in them.  We practiced with rainbow words, stamps, magnets and...Skittles during Daily 5 Word Work.  My teacher treat for  word work practice one day was to write the short i words, write them again with the "taste the rainbow" colors of Skittles and then use a skittle for the dot above all the short i's. "Skittles is the best short i word ever," said the kids!!  What a sweet way to practice some sweet words!!
