Hello Everyone!
Another quick share tonight.  Next week we will be studying the differences in homes, food, and activities of humans all around us.  Kids love learning about other cultures. I put together a very tiny unit where kids can be introduced to those differences.  This unit includes a book list, a poem and mini book to make, a research activity, comparison activities, a hands on visual with heart, a word search, abc order, and "think outside the box."  I'm not sure I will get all this in next week, but I will have it handy in case.

Veterans Day Unit- Thank You Veterans!

Money Game and Family Wants and Needs

Hello Everyone!
 We have been working hard this week on identifying coins and telling their value. Today we created a whole group game to help with cementing those ideas. We made a "Bigger than Life" gameboard (you know my love of those shower curtain sized gameboards!). We divided the board into 25 sections with tape and then filled each section with either a coin, the coin's name, the value, or the value words.  We taped paper coins to a foam die. The kids took turns rolling the die and covering something on the board that matched with the coin rolled. We played until we had 5 in a row covered!  The kids were completely engaged for the entire game, helping each other and cheering when we finally had 5 in a row.  A smaller version of this game will become a math tub game for next week.

Next week we will begin a reading/social studies unit on family wants and needs.  I have shared my "Me and My Family" before, but I added some elements using two favorite books, "A Chair for My Mother," and "The Relatives Came."

Hats off to George and Abe

Hello Everyone,
We finished up our study of presidents this week. We loved learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Throughout our studies, both important men became like friends.  We learned some amazing things about the childhood of each and some interesting little tidbits about when they were adults.  We had fun comparing the two even though they lived many years apart.  They had so many similarities and, of course, so many differences.  
We loved that they each wore hats...each for different reasons, but both wore their hats with pride!
While studying Washington, we discovered that he wore a tricorn hat as did many of the soldiers of whom he was the general. Many soldiers wore little trinkets on their hats. Washington often wore a feather. 
While studying Lincoln, we discovered that he stored notes and other important papers in his tall black stovepipe hat.  
We, of course, had to make hats to go along with our studies. Here are some pics!

Historical Figures, MLK and Inventors

Hello Everyone!
It is so nice to have time to put some finishing touches on a couple of units that we have coming up! Another historical figure we will study after Eleanor Roosevelt is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a nation we celebrate his life daily! Thank you Dr. King! Officially we celebrate on the third Monday of January. I have posted about our activities before, but I went through and cleaned up, and added to my unit.  Here are some pics from the updated unit!

My second offering for today is a unit our curriculum team worked on this summer. We had fun integrating reading and social studies and are finding it a natural way to teach and get everything in.

This next unit is about other important historical figures.  It includes posters about Alexander Graham Bell, Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, Garrett Morgan, and Richard Allen along with reading strategy practice activities.  It also includes an invention home project packet for kids. The unit ended up to be over 50 pages! I am excited to include this unit in our curriculum in a few weeks!!  Here are a few pics from the unit!
