Natural Resources

Hello Everyone!
Another quick share today.  I am working on 2 huge events that are consuming my extra time---but are both so worth while.  I'm on a hunt today for about a hundred old rusty horseshoes!!  Ha Ha!  I think I can! I think I can!! :)  Wish me luck!
I wanted to share an updated version of my Natural Resources unit.  I have added a section inspired by "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein, one of my all time favorite books to use this time of year.  I've also added 5 new math tub activities focused on comparing numbers up to 120, adding single digits to multiples of 10.   Here are a few pics.

...As Lovely as a Tree...

Hello Everyone!
We had a  "tree"mendous day today!  We are finishing up our natural resources unit and today turned out to be all about trees!  We started off with our Think Outside the Box Thursday Morning Warm up. I gave the kids some little leaves and twigs.  They had to glue them on to their paper and create something different.

I am always amazed at the creativity in my littles!!

  We read several books about trees, brainstormed why trees are considered a natural resource, and created some summary list trees out of paint chip strips. Glue or tape a stick to the bottom and voila! Some pretty special little trees!!

We then had the opportunity to go outside to enjoy and study the trees around us.  We took paper and crayons out to take some rubbings. We of course talked about protecting trees for so many reasons. We are so lucky to have some beautiful trees around our school. 

We also talked about replacing any trees that are cut down or damaged by weather or fire. We found a great example of a new tree. 

What a great day of learning!

There's something in the water!

Hello Everyone!
I am so sorry I haven't been on lately.  Crazy, busy week!  
Among a gazillion other things, we continued with our study of natural resources, this week focusing on water. We wrote some great little poems, created a collage similar to our tree from last week, and made rain!  Here are a few pics! I'll let them tell the story of a few things from our week! :)

Making a raindrop collage from magazine scraps was sooooo fun!  We'll put it up next to our tree from last week!

 

Making rain is as simple and cheap as filling a can with ice, water, and blue foodcoloring, and watching the outside of the can for about a half an hour.  Water forms on the outside of the can and drips down. Blue food coloring is added to the water on the inside to show that it is not that water that is leaking.
