Hello Everyone!

Rudolph is one of my favorite winter characters. As I was planning for the week before our winter break, I decided I needed something fresh and cross curricular. This unit includes ELA and Math activities that coordinate with the objectives we want to cover at this time of the year, all centered around Rudolph! Take a peek at some of the things included.

Life Size Fact Family Practice

Hello Everyone!!

Welcome to our Window on Wonder!!  We had a lot of fun today practicing our addition/subtraction strategies and number sense by seeing the relationship of "fact families."  Earlier in the week, we  manipulated cubes to understand related facts. Then we moved to pictures to see related facts. We learned a little chant about fact families. Today we put our whole bodies into the process.  I picked up some Santa and elf hats from the dollar store (of course!) and printed off some numbers to glue to the hats. The Santa hats had numbers and the elf hats had the signs. We took turns building the four number sentences using 3 numbers and the signs. Having the kids actually move made the number sentences come to life!!

I plan on printing all the pictures and putting them along with the hats and a recording sheet in a math tub next week!!  Can't wait!!

Oh No! Santa's Stuck!!

Hello Everyone!

I'm back again with another free unit!  I love taking one piece of literature and creating cross curricular activities to go along with it!! This time my unit is based on "Santa's Stuck" by Rhonda Greene, one of my favs for this season!  The 34 page unit includes some problem and solution Reader's Response activities, four math tub activities, a craft connection and a science activity!  I can't wait to do these with my kiddos.

 I've been doing this activity for several years and love it.  Patterns are included in the unit.  Last year I even found some brick scrapbook paper to use for the chimney instead of just red construction paper.  I'm on a hunt for it again!

Math Mints (practicing fact families)

A view from today... We have been working very hard on fact families.  This week we decided to incorporate the practice into the season by creating math mints.  The inspiration of course was starlight mints with the red and white stripes.  The kids drew swirled lines coming from the middle of the bottom of two paper plates (just the cheap plates!), and then colored every other one red. I gave the kids two numbers for each plate.  They had to derive the four facts (two addition and two subtraction) from those numbers.  The facts were written on the white stripes of each plate. We glued the plates together, top to top and wrapped  the mint with clear wrap.  Kids helped each other tie yarn around the ends and we trimmed the edged.  Voila!!  Math mints! They look cute hanging up in the room! Simple, easy, cheap, fun! Try it!
