Money Game and Family Wants and Needs

Hello Everyone!
 We have been working hard this week on identifying coins and telling their value. Today we created a whole group game to help with cementing those ideas. We made a "Bigger than Life" gameboard (you know my love of those shower curtain sized gameboards!). We divided the board into 25 sections with tape and then filled each section with either a coin, the coin's name, the value, or the value words.  We taped paper coins to a foam die. The kids took turns rolling the die and covering something on the board that matched with the coin rolled. We played until we had 5 in a row covered!  The kids were completely engaged for the entire game, helping each other and cheering when we finally had 5 in a row.  A smaller version of this game will become a math tub game for next week.

Next week we will begin a reading/social studies unit on family wants and needs.  I have shared my "Me and My Family" before, but I added some elements using two favorite books, "A Chair for My Mother," and "The Relatives Came."

What's In Your Piggy Bank?

Hello Everyone!
I had a couple minutes of down time today (or I should say, I was forced into down time today due to some vein surgery this week which actually threw me for a crazy loop! UGH!!  If you are a teacher on her feet all day, please make sure you go home from time to time and try to elevate your feet!!!).  Anyway, during my "down time" I had a few minutes to recreate my money posters.  I have posted my money unit before, but I wanted some cute posters to put up as reminders to kids.  
We are starting our week long unit of coins and money this coming week.  Our objectives include identifying the major coins and telling the value.  Kids also need to be able to count groups of like coins and give the value.  It goes right along with all the skip counting we've been doing the past couple of weeks.

Ahhhhhhhhh.........

Hello Sweet Friends!
Phew! Ahhhhhh!  Wow!  Sniff!  Another year with first graders is over.  I do have to tell you that this past week was so bittersweet for me.  It is no secret that teachers take their students and carry them in their hearts.  Some people say that they love teaching because there is a beginning and and end every year. I find it hard to accept the "end."  Each of these littles will have a spot in my heart for who knows how long.  Some of them forever!! Lots of tears while saying goodbye...No! Not goodbye...See you later!! :)

The last couple of weeks of school have been busy with a fun popsicle unit.  I shared the unit already, but I added some fun components, so you may want to download again. 
The unit included a simile activity that I decided to create a craft connection as a publishing component. Here are a few pics.

After brainstorming some fun popsicle similes, the kids turned them into poems by writing some of them on paint chip samples. They added a popsicle stick and tah dah!! A sweet, colorful way to publish! 

The last week of our popsicle unit brought some fun ways to practice some math and personal finance. (Yes personal finance is one of our objectives! ) We created a little popsicle shop and had the kids earn money for doing things during the week.  They collected coins in little bags and set goals for what they wanted to buy at the end of the week.  The kids had opportunity to trade coins in. When they got 5 pennies, they traded for a nickel, etc.  
On Friday they were able to "buy" the popsicle of their choice if they had enough money. 
We also made some fun little "Soda Jerk" hats. Too cute!
