OUCH!!!

Hello Everyone!
Thanks for stopping by for a peek into our wonder-filled first grade life!!  This week my kids have poetry on the brain!!!  We are having so much fun!  Today I read the infamous poem, "Sick" by Shel Silverstein.  If you're not familiar with it, a little girl lists off all the things that are wrong with her... two pages worth! :)  She obviously can't go to school! But wait! It's Saturday?  And she''s off to play! :)  My class looooved that poem.  We decided to write another list poem, this time using the same idea as Silverstein, but with "OUCH!" as our focus (We're working on ou/ow sounds in wordwork this week!).
We brainstormed all the things we could think of that would make us say "Ouch!" and then each kiddo had fun creating his own poem on a giant bandaid!  They turned out great!! OH!  I forgot to tell you that a little motivational touch was to let each one put on some bandaids!!  Most ended up on faces!  LOOOOOVED it!!! Writing poetry can be spontaneous, cheap, rewarding, fun literacy learning!!  OH! And first graders can write poetry!  "I'm a poet! Don't you know it?" :)

I have a feeling we'll be writing poetry all month!!!  YAY! Can't wait to see what we can do!!

Stay tuned!!!
Joyfully!
Nancy
