Hello Everyone!!
Welcome back!  We have been busy in our little classroom! We had a blast coming up with ideas to help get Santa "unstuck" from the chimney. The kids are getting so creative with their lit. responses!!And to add some flair, we of course needed to do a hands on visual to go with the fun ideas!  I have been doing this little activity for about 10 years now and each year they turn out cuter than the year before!  I posted the unit that includes the details to this last week. Look for Santa's Stuck on the sidebar.

We also worked very hard on adjectives, using "Must Be Santa" (also in the Santa's Stuck unit). That song has over 30 adjectives in it!!  After really enjoying the song and the special words included, we created these cute little Santas and wrote the sentence to go with it! The patterns are included in the unit, too!

We have a lot of fun learning opportunities coming up over the next 3 weeks! Keeping the kids focused on learning is always a challenge this time of year.  Literature-wise, next week we will enjoy "If You Take a Mouse to the Movies." The kids absolutely love Laura Numeroff's books. I have shared this unit before, CLICK here if you need to download it again!

I do want to share what we have coming up before winter break in math.  We will be working on personal finance including needs and wants, spending, saving, giving, etc.  We used to cover this objective in the spring, close to summer break, but this year we are hitting it this winter. Last year I created a personal finance unit with a lot of fun summery lemonade components and decided that wouldn't work for this year, so I transformed it into a unit with a wintery feel. Some of the learning opportunities use the books "If You Take a Mouse the the Movies" and "Ox-Cart Man."

Personal Finance for Kids

Hello Everyone!
I know! It has been a long time since my last post.  I have had so much family stuff going on that I have been absolutely crazy tired by the end of the day.  I think things are settling in now, so I finally had a second to sit down and present a quick post.  Thanks for hanging in there with me.  I am so excited about how our poetry unit is coming along.  We have one more week and then I'll be ready to share some of my little poets' work!  They have been loving it!!
Until then, I wanted to share a new unit that we started incorporating into our math curriculum. Personal Finance.  Yes! You read that correctly. I don't know if you have that in your objectives, but in Texas we try to cover saving, spending, and sharing. Our adopted curriculum (Pearson) does a good job of supporting the objectives with technology based lessons, but if you know me, you know I have to have some things to accompany the curriculum in my math tubs.  I created a Personal Finance unit that I am sharing tonight. Here are a few pics from the 50 page unit.

The unit includes some whole group vocabulary activities and 6 math tub activities. I can't wait for my kids to learn through these hands on personal finance activities and I hope they will help you help your kids learn as well!

A Cool Finish with a Personal Finance Touch!

Hello Everyone!
Phew!! We are in the final stretch!  9 more days of first grade fun!! In math we are finishing up with a "cool"personal finance unit.  It's a unit that includes just about everything we've studied in math and social studies. Money, addition and subtraction, fractions, wants and needs, everyday living, etc.  I put together a little unit last year that now includes a personal finance section. "Popsicle Pizzazz" includes some cross- curricular learning/review opportunities that will help the last few days go down smoothly! Here are a few pics.

A PERFECT book to read if you want to combine cool popsicles and personal finance is a recent discovery, "Root Beer and Banana" by Sarah Sullivan.  It is about two girls who accidentally discover friendship and charitable giving through ice pops!! I am so excited to share this story with my littles!!

The popsicle unit is now about 75 pages, but you certainly can pick and choose which learning opportunities to print and do!
