Couch Potato!

Hello Everyone!
I have not been a couch potato this summer, but have been enjoying some time to rediscover some of my favs!
One of my favorite books to use along with our family/friends unit is "He Came With the Couch" by David Slonin.  If you do not have this book, you better hurry and grab one.  I have been in love with this book for several years. There is so much you can do with it!  The illustrations are what grabbed my attention.  You'll have to read the book several times for the kids to gather all the wonderful inferences and the passage of time shown through the the illustrations!
I am sharing my 16 page unit in hopes that you will fall in love with this book as well!!  It containes some reader's response activities, some anchor chart ideas, a couple of craft connections, some text connection activities and extensions.  If you are one of my kiddos, I hope you remember loving this book and will do some of these activities this summer.  Don't forget to ask mom or dad to print off some of the activities you want to do.

I've included some patterns in the unit

Thanks for stopping for a peek into the wonder-filled world of first grade!  Happy Learning!

Joyfully!
Nancy

  1. Thanks so much for introducing me to this adorable book and for sharing your amazing activities. I just reserved the book from my local library and I look forward to reading it to my students. I never heard of it before today.

  2. Oh my goodness! I couldn't believe it when I saw this post! I L.O.V.E. this book and used it last year as a compare/contrast activity with another monster book! Thanks for giving me an additional way to use this book during my monster unit!

  3. I appreciate everything you share on this blog! Can you tell me more about what you do with the rummage sale pages? Do you have the kids post what they want to sell in the classroom before they complete the page about what they want to buy?

  5. Hi Alicia!
In this story, the family buys a couch at a rummage sale. We first discuss what a rummage sale is (many kids will understand garage, yard sale or flea market) Then I want them to think about something they would sell or hope to buy at a rummage sale. They can simply illustrate or find pics in magazines. You could have them choose which page they want to do or do both! :) You could turn this into a needs/wants activity or supply/demand. It always interests me as to what the kids would sell. You could even make this a math lesson with adding price tags, working with money, etc. We have had a used book swap before that could easily fit into this whole idea. Have fun!!

  6. Hi Nancy
I love this book! I was introduced to it by a preschooler, a few years ago, but since have moved to first grade and I had forgotten about it. Thank you so much! This is really great. I appreciate your giving it to us!
